been asked lately about keeping critters out of cabinets, drawers, and closets. most people think moth balls are the answer, but have you tried using a potpourri bag with cedar chips instead?

remember in the older days they used cedar to make cabinets, dressers and closets? ask your grandparents if they had bug problems. i think not. and it’s a green way to reduce chemical usage!

there’s a company in Texas that is offering to fog spray homes to kill pest using cedar fogging. after the fog settles you can go back in the house. it’s safe for humans and pets. No more waiting 3-4 hrs and then opening windows for 2-3 hrs before going back in and it doesn’t hurt fish or other exotic pets.

it costs more than bombing a house but it last 3 times longer than chemicals and your house will smell like you live in a cedar forest for weeks afterwards; not like you just moved next to the dump and the wind shifted your way.

well that’s it for now — see you next time…

and remember …

did you know that the bottled water you get in the stores is mostly from municipal water facilities from other states? why pay for water when its the same thing you get out of the tap? the only difference is sometimes they run it thru a filter.

go to home depot or lowes and buy a filter system for $25 or higher. if you’re real picky get the osmosis system for anywhere from $ 150 to $200 and have a plumber install it for you.

your cost for replacing a filter: about $7 a month.

bottled water costs the average home about $30 a month; that’s about $ 360 a yr!

so lets look at the return on your investment:

1st year
filter system $50
plumber $ 75
filter $84 per yr

2nd year
filters $84
and so on

cost of bottled water
$360 yr

in the first year you will have saved about $200
and after that you will have saved $275
So why pay for what you get out of tap?

bottled water companies make a 200% profit from you.

save some money.
Want proof? go to youtube look up penn and teller: bottled water.

see for your self.

lets talk about ways of saving energy.
here are some tips to cut your electric bill.
1. change your incandescent bulbs to either CFL or LED, they use half the wattage and provide an equal if not better quality of light. and over time they cost a lot less.
2. change your light switches over to motion or infrared switches. Kids always forget to shut the lights off when they leave a room, heck I am guilty I can never seem to shut my bathroom and bed room light off, now I never worry after 15 minutes if there is no movement boom boom out go the lights.
3. when buying a new appliance look for the energy star rating. the higher the rating the less electricity it uses.
4. have a thermal blanket put on your water heater helps keep the water warmer longer and reduces heating time.
5. I know some people won’t agree with this one, but a timer on the water heater does help. most people are not home from 8 to 5 pm. so why not set the timer to fit your schedule, shuts off at 8 am during week and turns on at 4:30 just before you get home. they do come in digital units and are easy to set up.

well not much else, gotta go to work. so have yourself a green day.
